Category: Engines/Viewers/SDKs: Compression
Pegasus develops high quality lossy and lossless image compression and decompression tools for digital still images under the PICTOOLs umbrella of development tools. By enhancing standard JPEG, Pegasus has developed tools for high speed-high quality compression, high speed decompression and color mapping - including the new progressive JPEG format. PICTools toolkits can create and display industry standard progressive JPEG format.

A new lossless compression, IMPACStar, based on Pegasus' research in "entropy encoding" has created a better alternative for GIF and G3/G4 as well as any 1 bit to 8 bit image.

All PICTOOLs development tools are optimized for speed and the best possible compression and decompression for Internet or non-Internet based applications. Pegasus' new line of toolkits, the ImagN imaging toolkits now offer MMS enhancements in displaying images. MMXTM technology provides for faster image decompression and faster compression within all PICTOOLs toolkits.

Key Pentium® II processor features/performance benefit
Features Benefits
Improved compression speed 2-3X speed up in overall compression speed with optimizations in the DCT and color conversion routines
Improved decompression speed IDCT, color conversion and dithering all benefit using MMX technology. MMX technology provides potentially 2-3X speedup in these three functional areas
Increased color reduction routines Pegasus has optimized PICTools conversion routines for 24 bit image conversion to 16 bit, 8 bit and 4 bit image data.
