Tokyo Metropolitan Technical High School Wins Sumo Robot Contest
Competing against 2,400 students, the 20-member Information Processing Team from Tokyo Metropolitan Technical High School won the 1998 All Japanese Robot Sumo contest. The event, which is sponsored by both the Education Ministry and the Ministry of International Trade, is an annual event geared towards high school students. To win, they must complete four levels of competition. These are: High School level self-control, High School level Remote Control, General level Remote Control and General level Self Control.
The competition consists of two robots wrestling each other in a ring that measures 154 cm (approximately 5.05-foot). To win, one robot must push the other out of the ring.
Using four PIC16F84s and numerous sensors, and operating without any assistance from the students, the robot also had to perform the following features: vacuum the floor with the approximate sucking force equaling 30 Kg., peel off the opponent’s vacuum, ignore the sensors of the opponent robot, and smart controlling firmware.
