Thank you for purchasing the Nikon Digital Camera D1 and Nikon Capture software. Throughout this document, the word "camera" refers to the Nikon D1. This document contains the latest available information, which may not be included in the user's manual. We recommend you to read two other readme files. The "Readme2.txt" files gives you information about some of limitations of operations and the "Readme3.htm" describes details of the Nikon Color Management System. 1. Recommendations The folders to be used for temporary files and for image thumbnails can be set in the "File Locations" tab in the Preferences Dialog. For best results, set both of these folders to drives with at least 500 MB of free space. For the Camera: In order to minimize the time lag after pressing the camera's shutter-release button, you can set Custom Setting #30 to "C" on the camera. This can also be done with Nikon Capture by opening the Camera Control Window, selecting the "Mechanical" tab, and setting the Shooting Mode to "Continuous". To avoid unexpected shots when pressing the camera's shutter-release button, you can set Custom Setting #26 (Maximum number of consecutive shots in continuous shooting mode) to 1. 2. What's new on the version 1.1 2.1. Wider support for IEEE1394 controllers You can use Nikon Capture with the Adaptec's IEEE1394 controllers model 8920 and 8945 but also any other vendor IEEE1394 board or PC-card IEEE1394 interface controllers for laptops computers. If you are going to use controllers other then the Adaptec 8920 and 8945, there is a strong possibility that you will not have correct operation unless Windows 98 Second Edition is installed. In some other cases there may be a conflict between the Adaptec IEEE 1394 controller and the USB interface system on your PC. Adaptec indicates that Windows 98 Second Edition may resolve the problem in some cases, but in other cases it may not. Please check with Adaptec for updates if you own a 8920 or 8945 IEEE 1394 Controller Card. You may need to disable the USB interface in your PC to use the Adaptec 8920 or 8945 cards even if you use Windows 98 Second Edition for your OS. 2.2. Windows HTML View available You can view the Nikon Capture Help file throughout the Windows HTML help function. In order to use this function, IE Ver. 3.02 or later (In case of Windows95, IE Ver. 4.0 or later) should be installed on your machine. 2.3. 16 bit TIFF file output Image processing accuracy has been improved in the 16bit TIFF file output created from D1 RAW mode data. 3. Major bug fixes on the version 1.1 A lot of minor problems that existed with version 1.0 had been fixed on the version 1.1. Followings are the major bug fixes for version 1.1. 3.1. Color difference between Nikon Capture and Adobe Photoshop Color difference between an image displayed in the Nikon Capture window and the same image in the PhotoShop window is now minimal. There was large difference between them using the version 1.0 Nikon Capture that was caused by a problem in Nikon Capture. You may notice that there is very small difference even with the 1.1 version of Nikon Capture. Nikon and Adobe engineers are working to find out what causes this difference. 4. General Limitations and Information 4.1. Your system doesn't recognize the D1 connected with IEEE1394. When you use any IEEE 1394 interface card other than the Adaptec's IEEE1394 board with Windows98 Second Edition, Nikon capture may not recognize the camera even though the camera is connected to the machine. You can confirm the status of the camera connection by checking an indicator located at the bottom left corner of the Nikon Capture tool palette. It shows "red" when Nikon Capture cannot find the camera and shows "green" when it finds the camera, just like a traffic signal. In this case, please make sure the camera is connected to the system correctly by the following procedure. 1) Open the Device Manager by holding the "ALT" key and double clicking on the "My Computer" Icon 2) Select the "device manager" tab from the shown "System property" 3) Make sure the "Nikon D1" Is showing as a registered device If " Nikon D1" isn't registered, please follow the check list Called "cannot recognize the camera" from the AppendixA:Troubleshooting" in your D1 user guide HotConnect software is only required if you are using the Adaptec IEEE1394 Controllers. If Nikon Capture does not recognize the "Nikon D1" Even though it had been registered, you will find it listed under "other or Unknown device", if this is the current conditions, the Camera's driver software download may not have had been done correctly. Follow these steps to register the D1 with the Windows Device manager. a) Select the "Nikon D1" registered on the "Other device" and click the "Properties" button. b) Click the "Reinstall Driver" button. c) "Update Device Driver Wizard" is shown. Push the "NEXT" bottom. d) Select the "Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now (Recommended)" then click the "next" button. e) Insert the Nikon Capture CD-ROM into your computer. If the computer displays the "Welcome window", please close the window by pressing the "Exit" button. You do not need to do anything if your computer does not display the"Welcome window". f) Select "CD-ROM drive" as the target drive and click the "next" button. g) If the "Windows driver file search for the device:" is shown click the "Next" button. h) If the "Windows has finished installing an updated driver for your hardware device" Is shown, click the "Finished" button. i) When you finished installing the driver software, you should follow the operation #1 to #3 and check whether the camera Is recognized by "Nikon Capture" or not. 4.2 Automatic Meter Switch-Off When the camera's Mode Dial is set to "PC", the length of time before the exposure meter switches off is extended to 3 minutes. When the camera is connected to Nikon Capture, this time is extended to 15 minutes. You can change this so that the camera always remains on by changing the setting on the "General" tab in the Preferences Dialog. When this setting is 15 minutes, after 15 minutes of inactivity, the camera will go into a "sleep" mode. At this time, the camera will disconnect from Nikon Capture, and the green connection indicator will change to red. It is not possible to reactivate the camera through software. To reactivate the camera, you must perform some function on the camera body, such as half-pressing the shutter-release button. 4.3. Deleting Images from a CF Card Protected and Hidden files on a CF Card will not be deleted when you choose "Delete Images in Camera" from the Camera menu, or "Delete Images on Card" from the File menu. These files WILL be deleted when you choose "Format Card in Camera" from the Camera menu. 4.4.Single Shooting Mode When Custom Setting #30 is set to S, or the "Shooting Mode" in the Camera Control Window is set to "Single", the camera's shutter- release button will be locked immediately after taking a photograph, and will remain locked until the camera is finished processing that photograph. If you press the shutter-release button during this time, the next shot will be taken after the camera is finished processing the current photograph. 4.5. Saving Images on a CF Card Images cannot be saved on the camera's CF card while the camera is connected to Nikon Capture. When connected, all images are transferred to the computer. If you want to save images on the CF Card, you must exit Nikon Capture, remove the IEEE 1394 cable from the camera, or change the Mode Dial from "PC" to something else (S or C). 4.6. Shooting RAW Data Images When Nikon Capture starts, it forces Custom Setting #28 to be 1. This enables the camera to shoot RAW data images. You cannot change Custom Setting #28 while Nikon Capture is running. To change this setting, you need to exit Nikon Capture or remove the IEEE 1394 cable from the camera. 4.7. Opening Image Files in Nikon Capture Nikon Capture can open only image files that were created by the camera. Furthermore, images which have been loaded into Nikon Capture and saved using the "Save Final Image" option in the File menu cannot be reopened with Nikon Capture. To save images so that they can be reopened by Nikon Capture, you need to use the "Save Original Image" option in the File menu. 4.8. Time Lapse Photography Limit When you shoot images using the Time Lapse Photography Dialog, and the delay time set is shorter than the time necessary to transfer and process an image in Nikon Capture, the next shot will be delayed until the processing of the current shot is finished. 4.9. Unsharp Mask When using the Unsharp Mask Window, set the Halo Width to the smallest value you can, while maintaining the desired effect. Increasing the Halo Width will increase the image processing time. 4.10. User-defined Custom Curve (Camera Curves) Limitation You can change the tone compensation by using Custom Setting #24. This function also allows you to define your own tone compensation curve, using the "Edit Camera Curves Dialog" in Nikon Capture. When using your own tone compensation curve, that curve will be used for JPEG (Fine, Normal, and Basic) and TIFF (RGB and YCbCr) data formats. The curve will NOT be used for images using the RAW data format. When the RAW data format is selected, the "Normal" tone compensation curve will be used. 4.11. Histogram A histogram for the current image is shown in the Curves Window. This histogram is for the entire image, not only for the cropped area. 4.12. Reset button of the Curves Window The Reset button in the Curves Window resets the information on all channels. You can reset the information on the selected channel alone by holding down the Ctrl key while pressing the Reset button. 4.13. Image Resolution If you choose"Pixel" as the unit for the "Width" and "Height" setting on the "Image resolution / Image size" window, the resolution setting will no longer be valid. And if the file is saved at the above setting, the resolution will be recorded at 300dpi. 4.14. Sample Image in the Edit Camera Curves Dialog The sample image displayed in the Edit Camera Curves Dialog can be changed by selecting an appropriate image, and choosing the "Use for Camera Curves Sample" option in the Image menu. Once you change the image used as the sample, it cannot be set back to the factory default. The sample image can only be set when the image was taken in the Raw Data mode. We recommend you take several test shots after setting the new table. When you do this, please remember that you need to use either JPEG or TIFF formats, and set the tone compensation custom setting (#24) to"CS" which is called:"user defined custom curve". 4.15. Create Copy When you create a copy of an image by using the "Create Copy" option in the File menu, all settings in the Size / Resolution Window, Curves Window, Color Adjustment Window, and Unsharp Mask Window are copied to the new image. 4.16. Selection of Profiles When you select a monitor profile in the CMS tab of the Preferences Dialog, you must select a monitor profile. If another profile (such as a printer profile) is selected, Nikon Capture may not work properly. Also when selecting a CMYK separation profile, be sure to select a profile which has a CMYK color space. 4.17. Saving Multiple Thumbnails When you select two or more thumbnails in the Camera Image Window and choose "Save Final Image" or "Save Original Image" from the File menu, extensions are not added to the file names. If you need extensions, press the "File Names..." button and put the extension in the Suffix box. Generally, ".TIF" is used for TIFF files, ".JPG" is used for JPEG files, ".PCT" is used for PICT files, and ".NEF" is used for NEF files. 4.18. Pressing the Shoot Button Repeatedly In the Camera Control Window, if you press the "shoot" button two times quickly, the button does not look as if it has been pressed. The second shot will sometimes be taken after the first shot has been transferred to the computer. 4.19. Flexible Program Steps The number of steps set for Flexible Program displayed in the Camera Control Window shows the number of "clicks" on the camera's main command dial (Rotation to CCW is [+] and rotation to CW is [-]). This is the same value shown in the Camera Settings Section in the Camera Image Window. The effect on the shutter speed and aperture values depends on Custom Setting #2 (EV Steps for Exposure Control). Therefore, under the same conditions, if you set the same value for Flexible Program as in a previous photograph, you may get different results if Custom Setting #2 is set differently. 4.20 Using the "Auto save" function: When you use the "Auto save" function, please note that the "color balance", "Curve" and "Unsharp mask" behave differently depending on the the setting called:"Setting in next camera image" on the "General" tab of the preferences. a)Using the "Use Default Settings" (Factory default): When you select the "Use Default Settings" option, the settings for color correction and unsharp mask which are stored as the default settings will be applied. Any current settings in any open dialogue boxes, i.e. Unsharp Mask and /or either color balance or curves, will be ignored. You can change the default settings using the "save as default" function for each of the above controls. You need to use check boxes on the "auto save dialog" that will appear when you select the "Auto save" function, to decide whether or not you want to apply "color balance" or "curves" and/or "unsharp mask" to images that are going to be captured. Because you cannot use "color balance" and "curves" at the same time, you will only find two check boxes: one for "Color correction" and one for "Unsharp mask". The "color correction" check box represents either the "color balance" or "curves" depending on which one you have selected. b)Using the "Use Current Settings" function: You need to use the "apply" buttons at the left top corner of the "color balance," "curves" and "unsharp mask" control windows to decide whether or not you want to apply "color balance," or "curves" and/or "unsharp mask" to images that are going to be captured. You cannot use the check boxes on the "auto save dialogue" to do this. 5. Known problems ================================================ 5.1. Custom setting #19 (Aperture setting during zooming) When Custom Setting #19 is set to 1, Nikon Capture may not control the aperture properly. 5.2. Curve Simulation in the Edit Camera Curves Dialog The simulation of a curve's effect, as seen in the sample image in the Edit Camera Curves Dialog, may be different from an actual image shot using that curve. After pressing the OK button in the dialog, the curve will be sent to the camera. Please shoot a test image with Custom Setting #24 (Tone compensation) set to "CS", and the Data Format set to "JPEG" or "TIFF". 5.3. Adjust White Balance Dialog The Adjust White Balance Dialog is a modal dialog. When this dialog is displayed, the other windows cannot be moved. After pressing the "Start" button in this dialog, the dialog box itself cannot moved until you are finished sampling points. Make sure that the part of the image that you want to sample is not covered by this dialog when you press the "Start" button. 5.4. Using Photoshop with Nikon Capture Nikon Capture allows you to select an "external application" in the Preferences Dialog with which to open saved images. If you are using Windows NT 4.0 and the "external application" is set to Photoshop 5.0 or Photoshop 5.0 LE, you may get one of the following error messages when Nikon Capture tries to launch Photoshop. Photoshop 5.0: "Could not open the document. Could not find the file." Photoshop 5.0LE: "Could not find the file. The process is aborted." In this case, you can open Photoshop manually (from the Start menu) and open the desired files from there. 5.5. Changing Multi AF area using Nikon Capture When you change the focus area using the "camera control" window of Nikon Capture, it actually changes the focus area from one area to the other, however the "focus area display" in the camera viewfinder will not be updated and stays at the initial position. Please use the "focus area selector" on the back of the camera if you need to update the AF area display in the camera viewfinder. 6.
