Thank you for purchasing the Nikon LS-2000 Super Coolscan and/or Coolscan III. We are sure that it will give you many hours of reliable and productive use.
Please read the following important information, which was not included in the manual. 

Nikon Scan 2.1 is designed to support the LS-2000 and Coolscan III only.


1. Nikon Scan 2.1
1.1. Performa 5200 series, 6200 series, Power Macintosh 6200, 6300 and PowerBook 1400 series, 5300 series
These computers may experience scanning problems. If you experience any problems, move the file called "MAID Driver HS", located in the "Utility" folder into the folder called "Nikon MAID", which can be found in the  "Preferences" folder, located within your System Folder.

1.2. Scan speed
Scan speed will vary, depending upon the computer system environment. Turning off the Nikon Color Management System (CMS) and/or Surface Defect Correction may decrease scan times. When you turn CMS off, you will need to restart Nikon Scan.

1.3 PhotoDeluxe 2.0
If you use Nikon Scan 2.1 with PhotoDeluxe 2.0, you should not perform batch scans. You turn on Òclose windows after scanningÓ.

1.4. Using the Strip Film adapter and the IX240 (Advanced Photo System) film adapter
1.4.1. Working with multiple thumbnails
The Strip Film and IX240 film adapters allow you to browse your film as thumbnails. Additionally, selecting multiple thumbnails by pressing the shift key and clicking on each thumbnail in turn, allows batch scans of the selected frames to be performed.
In this case, if you wish to set individual color adjustments and crops for each image, please select each thumbnail individually, making the required selections for color adjustments, prior to selecting multiple images for scanning.
If you wish to change the film type between negative and positive, you should select all of the thumbnails prior to changing the film type. For technical reasons, the film type is applied to each image individually.

1.4.2. Frame Boundary
When using the IX240 film adapter or the Strip Film adapter, Nikon Scan will automatically detect the edges of each frame. If, however, the Film Type setting is incorrect (e.g. Positive Film Type selected for a strip of negative images), this auto detect operation may not work properly. Make sure that the Film Type is set correctly prior to performing any scans.
Additionally, the thumbnail scan is an important step in aligning multiple frames for preview and main scans, so you should try to perform at least one thumbnail scan prior to doing any preview scans or main scans. If you cannot perform a thumbnail scan (it can be quite memory-intensive), you should try a preview scan. If the image appears to be offset, use the "Adjust Boundary Offset" controls, located within the "Extras" tab, to change the scan offset. Continue to take preview scans until you are satisfied with the result.

1.5. Memory allocation
If you are using the Nikon Scan 2.1 Application, here are the suggested allocations

If you are using the Adobe Photoshop 4.0.X plug-in, here are the suggested minimum allocation sizes for the Adobe Photoshop application:

The memory needed by Nikon Scan depends upon the conditions of each scan. Here are some techniques that you can try in order to minimize memory usage:
     1.) Reduce the number of images. that have previews. Each preview takes up memory.
     2.) Use sRGB or HSL color space and avoid CMYK color space. CMYK has more channels and uses more memory.
     3.) When using the IA-20 (Advanced Photo System) adapter, donÕt display thumbnails and use the index print supplied with the developed film instead.
     4.) Defect correction (CleanImage) takes memory (It will also slow scans down.). Turn it off unless you really need it.
     5.) Turn off Nikon Color Management system. Nikon CMS takes memory to handle calibrated color spaces. Turn it off and use RGB instead of sRGB, HSL or CMYK.

1.6.Auto Saved Batch Scan
For Auto Saved Batch Scans, you should use the Nikon Scan Application; but not the Nikon Scan plugin and  turn off "acquire batch scans directly to disk" in the "Misc" tab of the preferences dialog. You should confirm that there is enough disk space to save images.

1.7. 12bit scanning
For the LS-2000, 3rd party applications must support 16 bit/channel to acquire 12 bits images when using the Nikon scan Adobe Photoshop Plugin. We have tested 12-bit scanning on the following applications:
	Photoshop 4.0

1.8. System Virtual Memory
Nikon ScanÕs performance may be affected when System Virtual Memory is on. We suggest that you turn Virtual Memory off when using Nikon Scan.

1.9. Disk space requirement
Nikon Scan requires free disk space of approximately three (3) times the size of the image to be acquired.

1.10. Saved file Prefix 
Filename or filename prefixes should be less than 20 characters long. Nikon Scan often appends suffixes to filenames.

1.11.Shared Disks
Do not specify network volumes (shared disks) as scratch disks. This may cause problems in the operation of Nikon Scan.

1.12. RAM DOUBLER 2
Connectix RAM Doubler 2 may cause performance problems with Nikon Scan.

1.13. Changing adapters while scanning
Please do not attempt to change the adapter while a preview scan, main scan or thumbnail scan is in progress. This may cause damage to the scanner or the film.

1.14. Autofocus and prescan
If the "Perform Autoexposure Before Preview", "Perform Autoexposure Before Main Scan" and/or "Perform Autofocus Before Scan" checkboxes, located within the "Misc" tab of the "Preferences" dialog, are checked, an autofocus and/or autoexposure (prescan densitometry test) will be made immediately prior to making a scan. Once these operations have been performed, they should not need to be repeated, as long as the film is not removed from the scanner. You may also perform these tasks manually by using the "Autofocus" and "Autoexposure" icon buttons in the main control dialog.

1.15. WESS mount
WESS mounts (slide frames made by WESS Plastics, Inc.) require a special attachment for the SF-200 (Slide autofeeder). The small white plastic attachment is provided in the SF-200 box and requires you to run a special utility to install the attachment to the SF-200. It is called Attachment Utility" and is placed into the ÒUtilityÓ folder, located within the ÒNikon Scan 2.1Ó folder. Please install this attachment prior to operating the SF-200 with WESS mounts.

2. Nikon Color Management System (CMS)
The Nikon Color Management System is a new feature of the Nikon Scan 2.X Scanner Control Software. It is designed to improve the color accuracy between the image as seen on the original film and the resulting images on your monitor and your printer.

2.1. Exchanging image data between Nikon Scan 2.1 and other applications
The Nikon Scan 2.1 application always displays images using the monitor profile and gamma settings. These are external to the saved image data, so third-party applications that open images saved from the Nikon Scan 2.1 application may not display them in exactly the same manner as the Nikon Scan 2.1 application. Each application has a specific way of adjusting monitor gamma. Please refer to the third party vendors for assistance in making these adjustments. It may be helpful to have images open in Nikon Scan and your third party application at the same time to make matching easier..

2.2. Custom ICC Profiles for Monitors and CMYK Output Devices
Nikon Scan 2.1 supports version 3.4 of the International Color Consortium (ICC) profile format.
Nikon Scan 2.1 uses a generic profile for monitors, and a generic profile for CMYK output devices. Customized profiles provided by manufacturers of calibrated displays and/or output devices may improve color accuracy. Contact the vendor of your display(s) and/or output device(s) to see if they will provide these customized profiles.
PLEASE NOTE: Incorrect profiles can introduce serious problems to the Nikon Scan 2.1 application. Nikon Inc. will only support the provided generic profiles.

2.3. NKLS2000LS30.icm
 An ICC profile named NKLS2000LS30.icm has been installed in the ColorSync profiles folder within your System Folder.
This profile has been provided so that third-party applications (such as Adobe Photoshop) may calibrate their image data to match that scanned by Nikon Scan 2.1. This profile is not used by Nikon Scan 2.1, but the application must be set up in the following manner in order to calibrate output using this profile:

Use the Preferences dialog to perform the following:

If you are using the Nikon Scan 2.1 Application:
  1.) In the "Color Management" tab, turn off the "Use Nikon Color Management" checkbox.
  2.) In the "Gamma" tab, set the Preview Gamma to a value of 2.2.
  3.) Quit the application and restart it.

If you are using the Nikon Scan 2.1 Adobe Photoshop Plug-in:
  1.) In the "Color Management" tab, turn off the "Use Nikon Color ManagementÓ checkbox.
  2.) In the "Gamma" tab, set the Preview Gamma to a value of 2.2.
  3.) In the "Gamma" tab, check the "Use Preview Gamma" checkbox.
  4.) Quit the application and restart it.

3. Using Kodak Kodachrome film
Kodachrome Slide Film uses a unique dye. Because of this, it will respond to scanning in a manner different from all other slide films, including Ektachrome and Fujichrome. This unique dye may affect the color reproduction of images scanned from Kodachrome originals. In addition, Surface Defect Correction will be affected when using Kodachrome film.

4. Known problems
4.1. Support for FlashPix format
Nikon Scan does not support save or display Grayscale images in FashPix format.

4.2. Saving Images in the  HSL color space is not supported
The HSL color space is not supported by any standard image file formats, so you will not be able to save images that are in HSL. You must convert to RGB, sRGB, Grayscale or CMYK in order to save the image.

4.3. Overwriting Setting
Overwriting previous saved settings without first deleting the previous settings causes problems. Please donÕt use the same name as an existing file when saving setting.

4.4. Connecting scanners
Nikon Scan is designed to work with one scanner at a time. If you have multiple scanners attached, you should ensure that only one scan window is open during any given scanning operation. Use the ÒDeviceÓ tab in the preferences dialog to change the scanner.

4.5. Progress bar
In some cases, the progress bar may not accurately reflect the progress of an autofocus, autoexposure (prescan) or a preview scan.

4.6. Balloon help
When Nikon Scan is used as a plugin, Balloon Help can cause problems with the scanning dialog. We recommend that you do not use Balloon Help; and instead, use our active help.

5. New feature for Nikon Scan 2.1

5.1. Setting the film type
The Film Type setting can be changed whether or not there is film in the adapter.

5.2. TIFF ICC profile data
Nikon Scan will include ICC profile data in saved TIFF format files. This means that you can expect better color consistency in applications that support these profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop 5.0.

5.3. Scan and save into a file
We have added a feature in Nikon Scan 2.1 that can be accessed via the ÒMisc.Ó tab of the preferences dialog. This feature is called ÒScan Directly to DiskÓ, and can be implemented for both single and batch scans. When this feature is on, scans are not shown in open windows, but are instead, saved directly into a selected folder. This feature only works on the Nikon Scan application. It does not work in the plugin. When the files are saved, a logfile will be saved in the same directory. This file will be called ÒScan_Log.txtÓ.

5.4. Nikon Color Management system
5.4.1 Improved ICC Profiles
Nikon Scan 2.1 includes updated ICC profiles that should result in even better color consistency.

5.4.2. Supporting the COOLSCAN III
The COOLSCAN III is now supported by Nikon Scan 2.1.

6. Notice for users of Nikon Scan 2.0
Nikon Scan 2.1 overwrites previous installations of Nikon Scan 2.0 and converts Nikon Scan 2.0 files to the new version. DonÕt install Nikon Scan 2.1 if you still wish to use Nikon Scan 2.0.

6.1 The Nikon Scan 2.1 installer will ask you if you wish to delete the Nikon Scan 2.0 folder. If you have files and/or settings in the Nikon Scan 2.0 folder, make sure you have backed them up somewhere before answering ÒyesÓ to this dialog.

6.2 The Nikon Scan 2.1 installer will delete older versions of the Adobe Photoshop plugin. It will ask you if you wish to delete these older versions. If you answer "yes", the installer will remove ALL copies. When you install the new plugin, only one copy of the plugin is installed in the selected folder. If you wish to have more than one copy of the plugin, you should re-run the installer and select the secondary location(s).

7. Fixed bugs
7.1. A problem with the PowerBook 5300 and 1400 has been fixed in Nikon Scan 2.1. These computers require that the ÒMAID Driver HSÓ file be placed in the ÒNikon MAIDÓ folder, inside the ÒPreferencesÓ folder; located with the System folder.

7.2. We fixed a problem in which printouts always printed at maximum resolution.

7.3. We fixed a problem in which a single-pixel white line would appear along one edge of rotated images scanned with the plugin.

8. Versions
The Nikon Scan 2.1 CD-ROM contains a suite of components, each of which have their own names and version numbers. When an upgrade is released, a new general number is assigned to the Nikon Scan Suite. This release is called Version 2.1.

Please note that one of the components of Nikon Scan 2.1; the application, is also called "Nikon Scan 2.1", and that it has a different version number from the general number.

The following software packages are included in this CD release:

- Nikon Scan 2.1 for LS-2000 and CoolScan III (The suite of components mentioned above)
- Slides & Sound Plus 2.02

9. Bundled software packages:
This CD-ROM includes bundled software packages. Please contact the companies supplying the bundled software for technical support for that particular product. Nikon does not provide any technical support for these software packages.

9.1. Slides & Sound Plus:
Slides & Sound Plus is a multimedia slide show application developed by InMedia Presentations Inc. of Vancouver, BC, Canada. Please refer to the Quick Start guide for more information. This software is a trial version. Some functions on this software will expire 30 days after installation.

9.1.1 Slides & Sound Plus requires a PowerPC system and does not support any 68k Macintosh systems. 

9.1.2 You need to allocate 25 Megabytes to Slides & Sound Plus when using the Nikon Scan 2.1 Plug-in. To allocate this memory, use the Finder to select the Slides & Sound Plus application (single-click), select "Get Info" from the FinderÕs ÒFileÓ menu and set the Preferred Size to 25600 KB (25 MB).
