Thank you for purchasing the Nikon LS-2000 SuperCoolscan and/or Coolscan III. We are sure that it will give you many hours of reliable and productive use. Please read the following important information, which was not included in the manual. Nikon Scan 2.1 is designed to support the LS-2000 and Coolscan III only. 1. Nikon Scan 2.1 1.1. About using Nikon Scan 2.1 with the Windows NT-ASPI Layer Nikon Scan 2.1 requires 32 bit ASPI support. As delivered, Microsoft Windows NT 4 does not include the ASPI 32 driver files. Please note that during 1997/98 there have been a number of updates to both the ASPI 32 layer and the SCSI Card drives used by Windows NT. To assure smooth operation of all SCSI products, please visit the Adaptec Support site (http://www.adaptec.com) and obtain the most current versions of the ASPI32 layer ( the installer is called "Aspi32.exe"). Some third party SCSI controllers cannot be used in Windows NT. We suggest you use the Adaptec controller that is included with your scanner, or any SCSI controller on the compatibility list included with your documentation. 1.2. Scan speed Scan speed will vary, depending upon the computer system environment. Turning off the Nikon Color Management System (CMS) and/or Surface Defect Correction may decrease scan times. When you turn CMS off, you will need to restart Nikon Scan 2.1. 1.3. Using the Strip film adapter and the IX240 Film adapter 1.3.1. Working with multiple thumbnails The strip film and IX240 Film adapters allow you to browse your film as thumbnails. Additionally, selecting multiple thumbnails by pressing the Ctrl key and clicking on each thumbnail in turn, allows batch scans of the selected frames to be performed. In this case, if you wish to set individual color adjustments and crops for each image, please select each thumbnail individually, making the required selections for color adjustments, prior to selecting multiple images for scanning. 1.3.2. Frame Boundary When using the IX240 Film adapter or the Strip Film adapter, Nikon Scan will automatically detect the edges of each frame. If, however, the Film Type setting is incorrect (e.g. Positive Film Type selected for a strip of negative images), this auto detect operation may not work properly. Make sure that the Film Type is set correctly prior to performing any scans. Additionally, the thumbnail scan is an important step in aligning multiple frames for preview and main scans, so you should try to perform at least one thumbnail scan prior to doing any preview scans or main scans. If you cannot perform a thumbnail scan (it can be quite memory-intensive), you should try a preview scan. If the image appears to be offset, use the "Adjust Boundary Offset" controls, located within the "Extras" tab, to change the scan offset. Continue to take preview scans until you are satisfied with the result. 1.4 Auto Saved Batch Scan For Auto Saved Batch scans, you should use the Nikon Scan Application; but not the Nikon Scan TWAIN source and turn off "acquire batch scans directly to disk" in the "Misc" tab of the preferences dialog. You should confirm that there is enough disk space to save images. 1.5. 12-bit scanning For the LS-2000, 3rd party applications must support 16 bit/channel to acquire 12 bits images when using the Nikon scan TWAIN source. We have tested 12-bit scanning on the following applications: Photoshop 4.0 1.6. Auto focus and prescan If the "Perform Autoexposure Before Preview", "Perform Autoexposure Before Main Scan" and/or "Perform Autofocus Before Scan" checkboxes, located within the "Misc" tab of the "Preferences" dialog, are checked, an autofocus and/or autoexposure (prescan densitometry test) will be made immediately prior to making a scan. Once these operations have been performed, they should not need to be repeated, as long as the film is not removed from the scanner. You may also perform these tasks manually by using the "Autofocus" and "Autoexposure" icon buttons in the main control dialog. 2. Nikon Color Management System (CMS) The Nikon Color Management System is a new feature included in the Nikon Scan 2.1 Scanner Control Software. It is designed to improve the color accuracy between the image as seen on the original film and the resulting images on your monitor and your printer. 2.1. Exchanging image data between Nikon Scan 2.1 and other applications The Nikon Scan 2.1 application always displays images using the monitor profile and gamma settings. These are external to the saved image data, so third-party applications that open images saved from the Nikon Scan 2.1 application may not display them in exactly the same manner as the Nikon Scan 2.1 application. Each application has a specific way of adjusting monitor gamma. Please refer to the third party vendors for assistance in making these adjustments. It may be helpful to have images open in Nikon Scan and your third party application at the same time to make matching easier. 2.2. Custom ICC Profiles for Monitors and CMYK Output Devices Nikon Scan 2.1 supports version 3.4 of the International Color Consortium (ICC) profile format. Nikon Scan 2.1 uses a generic profile for monitors, and a generic profile for CMYK output devices. Customized profiles provided by manufacturers of calibrated displays and/or output devices may improve color accuracy. Contact the vendor of your display(s) and/or output device(s) to see if they will provide these customized profiles. PLEASE NOTE: Incorrect profiles can introduce serious problems to the Nikon Scan 2.1 application. Nikon Inc. will only support the provided generic profiles. 2.3. NKLS2000LS30.icm An ICC profile named NKLS2000LS30.icm has been installed in the Color directory, within your System directory. This profile has been provided so that third-party applications (such as Adobe Photoshop) may calibrate their image data to match that scanned by Nikon Scan 2.1. This profile is not used by Nikon Scan 2.1,; but the application must be set up in the following manner in order to calibrate output using this profile: Use the Preferences dialog to perform the following: If you are using the Nikon Scan 2.1 Application: 1. In the "Color Management" tab, turn off the "Use Nikon Color Management System" checkbox. 2. In the "Gamma" tab, set the Preview Gamma to a value of 2.2. 3. Quit the application and restart it. If you are using the Nikon Scan 2.1 TWAIN Source: 1. In the "Color Management" tab, turn off the "Use Nikon Color Management System" checkbox. 2. In the "Gamma" tab, set the Preview Gamma to a value of 2.2. 3. In the "Gamma" tab, check the "Use Preview Gamma" checkbox. 4. Quit the application and restart it. 3. Using Kodak Kodachrome film Kodachrome Slide Film uses a unique dye. Because of this, it will respond to scanning in a manner different from all other slide films, including Ektachrome and Fujichrome. This unique dye may affect the color reproduction of images scanned from Kodachrome originals. In addition, Surface Defect Correction will be affected when using Kodachrome film. 4. Known problems 4.1. Saving Images in the HSL Colorspace is not supported The HSL color space is not supported by any standard image file formats, so you will not be able to save images that are in HSL. You must convert to RGB, sRGB, Grayscale or CMYK in order to save the image. 4.2. Setting the standard output resolution When you select standard output resolutions in the "Scan size" tab, the value will be properly set as to the desired output resolution, however the list will always display "Custom". 4.3. Quitting the Nikon Scan application by clicking on the close box while scanning Closing the Nikon Scan application by clicking in the close box while a scan is in progress may cause the application to experience problems. It may not start again. In this case, either use the Task Manager to force the application to exit or restart Windows. 4.4. Connecting scanners Nikon Scan is designed to work with one scanner at a time. If you have multiple scanners attached, you should ensure that only one scan window is open during any given scanning operation. Use the "Device" tab in the preferences dialog to change the scanner. 4.5 batch scan stops on errors Nikon Scan TWAIN source will stop batch scan on errors, though you trun off "batch scan stops on errors" on "Misc" tab. 5. New feature for Nikon Scan 2.1 5.1 Setting the film type The Film Type setting can be changed whether or not there is film in the adapter. 5.2 TIFF ICC profile data Nikon Scan will include ICC profile data in saved TIFF format files. This means that you can expect better color consistency in applications that support these profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop 5.0. 5.3. Scan and save into a file We have added a feature in Nikon Scan 2.1 that can be accessed via the "Misc." tab of the preferences dialog. This feature is called "Scan Directly to Disk", and can be implemented for both single and batch scans. When this feature is on, scans are not shown in open windows, but are instead, saved directly into a selected folder. This feature only works on the Nikon Scan application. It does not work in the TWAIN source. When the files are saved, a logfile will be saved in the same directory. This file will be called "ScanLog.txt". 5.4. Nikon Color Management system 5.4.1 Improved ICC Profiles Nikon Scan 2.1 includes updated ICC profiles that should result in even better color consistency. 5.4.2. Supporting the COOLSCAN III The COOLSCAN III is now supported by Nikon Scan 2.1. 6. Notice for users of Nikon Scan 2.0 Nikon Scan 2.1 overwrites previous installations of Nikon Scan 2.0 and converts Nikon Scan 2.0 files to the new version. Don't install Nikon Scan 2.1 if you still wish to use Nikon Scan 2.0. 7. Fixed bugs 7.1 User-selected focus We have fixed a bug where user-selected focus position did not work properly for flipped an/or rotated images. 7.2. Batch scans force 12-bit data We have fixed a bug where selecting batch scans forced the bit depth to 12 bits. 8.
