Thank you for
investing in a Nikon digital camera.
Nikon View 4 is
designed to transfer your images from your Nikon digital camera or a Compact
Flash card loaded into a Compact Flash card reader to your computer's hard
disk. Nikon View 4 also supports a browser function, which allows you to see
thumbnail images for your selection before you copy images to your hard disk.
Please read the
following last minute important information.
1. Launching Nikon
View 4
Nikon View 4 will
be automatically launched by:
a) Putting a
Compact Flash card into your card reader. The card has to have at least one
image that was taken by your Nikon digital camera.
b) Connecting an
interface cable (IEEE1394 for D1/D1X/D1H, or USB for Coolpix 5000/995/885/775)
to your camera and your computer. Your camera should have a Compact Flash card
installed and the card must have at least one image that was taken by your
Nikon digital camera.
Please use the two
methods mentioned above, because these are the only ways to use this version of
Nikon View 4.
You can launch
Nikon View 4 manually, however you will only have access to the preferences
setting at this time.
2. Image Browser
Software
Nikon View 4 is not
designed to browse images that are located on your hard disk. Please use the
image browser software bundled with your camera.
For this release of
NikonView 4, iView Media Pro (Macintosh only) and Cumulus 5.0 trial version
(Macintosh and Windows) are bundled with Coolpix cameras. Cumulus 5.0 Limited
version (Macintosh and Windows) is bundled with SLR Digital (D1 series)
cameras.
Please contact the
following vendors for technical support or for sales related questions that you
may have regarding the bundle software. Nikon cannot provide support for these
software products.

Automatic Catalog
Feature
When Nikon View 4
transfers images to your hard disk, Nikon View 4 will launch one of the image
browsers mentioned above (if you have installed the browser software) and
registers thumbnails and photo information data (such as shutter speed, f-stop,
new file location in your hard disk and so on) with the browser software.
Since Nikon View 4
and the browser software are communicating when images are being transferred,
please do not quit from Nikon View 4 or the browser software during the
transfer.
2.1. Cumulus
a) Please allocate
35,840 KByte or more memory to the Cumulus application. This application may
not work properly with the default memory allocation. To increase the memory
allocation, select (single click) the application icon, (the icon should be
highlighted) then press the Command (Apple) key and "I" key at the
same time. You will be presented with the "Information" dialog box.
You will notice the pop down menu with the "Show:" label. Click on
this pop down menu (it will say "General Information") and select the
"Memory" menu choice. By selecting the "Memory" menu, you
will see two text boxes (Minimum Size and Preferred Size) where you would type
"35840" in both of them. Please note that you cannot change the
memory allocation while the Cumulus program is running. If you cannot edit the
memory allocation text boxes, please close the Info dialog by clicking the
"close box" in the upper left hand corner of the Info dialog, quit
the Cumulus application, then begin again.
b) When Nikon View
4 registers information with Cumulus, Cumulus opens one catalog file to store
all information. It may report an error if you have any other catalog file(s)
opened. Please close all catalog files other than the target catalog file, when
you transfer images using Nikon View 4.
c) When using
larger size image files, such as NEF files or TIFF files, you may feel that
registering those images into Cumulus LE takes too long. To change the
operation of Cumulus in this area please select the "Catalog" Menu
Item from the main menu bar, then select the "Cataloging options"
menu choice. Once the dialog box is displayed click on the "Stored Thumbnail (if large
enough)" radio-button" in the "Create Thumbnail from"
section of the "Cataloging Options" dialog box. This function is set
to "Entire Asset" as the default.
d) Cumulus database
software does not accept drag and drop the thumbnails from the Nikon View 4
software.
e) The length of
the file path for the database catalog file must be under 255 characters.. (This
setting can be found in the preferences of Nikon View 4) Nikon View 4 may not
be able to register images with Cumulus 5.0 correctly, if the length of the
file path exceeds 255 characters. The name of your hard disk is to be
considered part of the file path length. A typical path would be:
Macintosh HD/Nikon
Software/Nikon View 4/Catalogs/Catalogs Cumulus
The above path is
66 characters in length and acceptable. The Ò/Ó is not seen in the Macintosh
operating system, but must be considered present after each directory name.
f) If Culumus 5.0
is set as the ÒlinkedÓ database program (These settings can be found in the
preferences of Nikon View 4), Nikon View 4 will attempt to open a catalog file
using the ÒlinkedÓ database program to
register copied images, (in this case, the linked database program is Cumulus
5.0) when you start copying images using Nikon View 4. The name of the catalog
file can be set in the Nikon View 4 preferences, so that Nikon View 4 tells
Cumulus 5 to please open that catalog file. However if a catalog that has the
same file name as the preset file name opened already on Culumus 5.0 at the
time when Nikon View 4 initiates communications (This happens when you start
copying files), the communication may fail. Close the catalog file from Cumulus
5.0 and then start over in this case.
3. Nikon View 4 and
older versions of Nikon View (900, Ver. 2, Ver. 2.5, Ver. 3 or DX)
Please uninstall
any older version of Nikon View before the installation of Nikon View 4. The
Nikon View 4 installer will uninstall any older version of Nikon View, if it is
currently installed in your computer.
Do not install any
previous version of Nikon View, once you install Nikon View 4.
4. Compatible
Cameras
This release of
Nikon View 4 supports the following Nikon digital cameras through the digital
I/O connection port (IEEE 1394 or USB) as well as reading images through a
Compact Flash card reader.
.
Nikon Digital Camera D1X
Nikon Digital Camera D1H
Nikon Digital Camera D1
Nikon Digital Camera E5000 (Coolpix 5000)
Nikon Digital Camera E995 (Coolpix 995)
Nikon Digital Camera E885 (Coolpix 885)
Nikon Digital Camera E775 (Coolpix 775)
Nikon Digital Camera E990 (Coolpix 990)
Nikon Digital Camera E880 (Coolpix 880)
Please also note
that two cameras, two card readers, or a camera and a card reader cannot be
supported at the same time.
Nikon View 4 also
supports reading images from a Compact Flash card that contains images taken by
these cameras:
Nikon Digital
Camera E950 (Coolpix 950)
Nikon Digital
Camera E800 (Coolpix 800)
Nikon Digital
Camera E700 (Coolpix 700)
Nikon Digital
Camera E900s (Coolpix 900s)
Nikon Digital
Camera E900 (Coolpix 900)
5. Using Nikon View
4 with the D1 series camera
Please do not take
a picture with the D1 series camera, if you have the camera connected to your
computer and Nikon View 4 is being launched.
6. Multiple Image
sources are not supported
Nikon View 4 does
not support multiple image sources for simultaneous use. Image sources include
Coolpix cameras and Compact Flash cards which were used in any Nikon Digital
Camera. Please do not connect more than one image source to use with Nikon View
4 at any one time. Please do not put any CF card which were used in your Nikon
Digital camera into your card reader when you have the camera connected to your
computer.
7. Delete a folder
An error will occur
if you delete a folder using Nikon View 4, if the folder is located on a CF
card that is present in a D1 camera that is connected to your computer. This
occurs only if the CF card had been used in a card reader that was connected to
a Macintosh computer. This does not occur with D1X and D1H cameras.
8. Powering off the
camera or ejecting the Compact Flash card
Please do not turn
off the camera and do not eject the Compact Flash card from your card reader or
from the camera when Nikon View 4 is transferring images.
Please quit from
Nikon View 4 before you disconnect any cables from your camera.
Please quit from
Nikon View 4 and turn off the camera power before you eject a Compact Flash
card from your camera.
9. When a Compact
Flash Card contains both Coolpix and D1 images
If a Compact Flash
card stores images taken by a Coolpix camera and images taken by a D1 series
camera at the same time, Nikon View 4 may not display the photo information
(such as shutter speed, f-stop and so on) correctly.
10. Operation on
the back panel LCD of the D1X/D1H
The D1X/D1H allows
you to modify some of the camera settings (delete, file protect, file hide,
folder setting and card format) using the back panel LCD screen on the camera
even when you have the camera connected with Nikon View 4. Although you can
change these settings during this time, Nikon View 4 does not update the
results of those changes on your computer screen until the camera is
re-connected.
11. Nikon Capture
1.x
1. Using Nikon View
4 after using Nikon Capture 1.x
Before using Nikon
View 4, please switch off your D1/D1X/D1H and after a few seconds switch it
back on again. If your camera is connected to your computer using a cable and
you have just used the camera with Nikon Capture 1.x, the camera may not record
images correctly, if you continue to use the D1/D1X/D1H without switching it
off.
12. Card format
Please do not
format a Compact Flash card using Nikon Capture 1.x, when you are using Nikon
View 4 and Nikon Capture 1.x at the same time.
13. For MacOS 8.6
Users
a) To use your D1
series camera, you need to obtain "FireWire" Version 2.3.3 from the
Apple computer web site. This is an installer that places three system
extension files in your system. Note that newer versions of
"FireWire" may be available, but these updates may NOT be compatible
with MacOS 8.6.
As of May 24, 2001,
this file can be found at
http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11632.
b) To use your
Coolpix5000/Coolpix 995/Coolpix885/Coolpix775, you need to download "USB
Mass Storage Support" Version 1.3.5 from the Apple computer web site. As
of May 24, 2001, this installer can be found at
http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11418.
This driver
supports only Apple built-in USB ports.
14. System Virtual
Memory
Please turn off the
System Virtual Memory of the MacOS, if possible. Virtual Memory may cause a
reduction in the maximum data transfer rate when using the IEEE 1394 interface
or the USB interface.
Virtual Memory can
be turned off using the "Memory" control panel that can be found in
the Control panel folder in the Apple menu. You need to re-start your computer
for this change to take effect. Please note that Virtual memory may be required
for some applications to operate correctly. Only switch off VM on your system
if you are having speed related issues.
15. File size
Nikon View 4 creates
and adds thumbnail data to original image files during image transfer, when the
"Create Thumbnail" check box in the "Preference" dialog is
turned on, which is the default setting.
The file size after
transfer will be increased by 75 KB, because additional data has been added to
the original file. Please note that 75KB can be the same size as the original
image size (e.g. JPEG at VGA size). If this is the case, adding the thumbnail
will double the file size. If you use a dial up connection to the Internet, and
often use the VGA image size setting you may consider changing the "Create
Thumbnail" setting so the thumbnail is not added to the file. This will
maintain the expected file transmission time.
16. Memory
Please increase the
memory allocation for Nikon View 4, when Nikon View 4 cannot display all
thumbnail images properly. In general, more images and larger size thumbnail
requires more memory assignment. Refer to section 2.1. (Cumulus) for
instructions.
17. Coolpix 900(s)
and Coolpix 5000/Coolpix 995/Coolpix885/Coolpix775
When you mark an
image using a Coolpix 5000/Coolpix 995/Coolpix885/Coolpix775, and if a Coolpix
900(s) took that image previously, Nikon View 4 cannot recognize it as a marked
image.
18. Transfer mark
You can mark on
images using Coolpix885 and Coolpix775. Those marked images will be transferred
to your computer when you press the transfer button of Coolpix885 and
Coolpix775. However this transfer function will not work when you have more
than 1000 images marked on one large capacity CF card in the camera. Please
reduce the number of marked images.
When you use Nikon
View 4, it has a selective transfer function that allows you to transfer only
the marked images from the camera into your computer. This function is
available with using Coolpix 5000, Coolpix 995, Coolpix885 and Coolpix775 and
will not work if more than 1000 images are marked. Please reduce the number of
marked images in this case.
19. When using a CF
card that is full
Nikon View 4 will
display an error message that indicates, ÒThere is no image in the camera or on
the card. Exit from the program.Ó if you have a card that does not have any
capacity left in D1X or D1H connected using the IEEE1394 interface. (The camera
will display [CHA] on the top LCD in this case.) Please use a card reader or
delete any unneeded image from the Flash Card if this message is displayed.
20. Operation speed
using Coolpix 990 and 880
Nikon View 4.2 adds
support for the Coolpix 990 and 880 models (USB interface only) as a part of
Nikon's ongoing support for legacy products. Our goal is to continue to provide
enhancements in both hardware and software for our products when possible.
Please note that
operational speed with the Coolpix 990 and Coolpix 880 may not be fast as our
latest cameras such as Coolpix 5000, Coolpix 995, Coolpix 885 and Coolpix 775.
This speed
difference may be noticeable when the CF card in the camera stores many images
and contains big files such as a movie file or files shot in HI mode.
21. Known problem
- When you are copying
any image(s) from the Coolpix 990 or Coolpix 880 while using the USB interface,
please do not use any menu to initiate another operation. Nikon View 4 may not
work correctly in this circumstance.
- This release of
Nikon View 4 does not support "Drag & Drop" operation to register
any image(s) with a supported third party Database software (e.g. Cumulus 5 and
iView Media Pro) . Images may not be correctly registered even if it appears
that the registration was successful.
