NAG recognises high mathematical achievers with NAG Prize 2008

May 2008. The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), developer of world class mathematical, statistical and visualization software components, is delighted to announce the winners of the NAG Prize 2008. The NAG Prize, now in its second year, is awarded annually to recognize the achievements of students on mathematical and computing related MSc courses at the University of Manchester.

The winners of the NAG Prize 2008, Mary Iwunor and Andrew Gordon, were awarded their prize by Rob Meyer, NAG CEO, and Sven Hammarling, NAG Principal Technical Consultant, at a ceremony on 29 April 2008 at the University of Manchester. Mary and Andrew were awarded the prize on account of their outstanding exam results in MSc courses mathematical finance and mathematics and computational finance respectively.

Fundamental to NAG’s longstanding success as a developer of numerical algorithms is the fostering of young and upcoming mathematical talent from the world of academia. The company was founded on academic collaborations and still has very strong links with Universities and learning institutions spanning the globe, so choosing to sponsor courses at the University of Manchester seemed fitting given NAG’s history. NAG offers support to students and post graduates in many ways, whether by way of the NAG Prize or by recruiting students on yearly work placements.

Rob Meyer, NAG CEO said “NAG and the University of Manchester have had a long and mutually beneficial relationship that dates from the early days of NAG. Through collaborations in teaching, external seminars, student sponsorships and other project we have built a partnership well suited to the unique nature of NAG. Our sponsorship of mathematical related MSc courses at the University is our way of recognizing both these very able students and the high quality programs that Manchester has assembled.”
