NAG C Library, Mark 7

CLDLL074XL - License Managed

Windows XP/2003 Dynamic Link Library (32-bit)

Microsoft Visual C++ .NET Release 8.0

Installer's Note

Contents

1. Introduction

This Installer's Note is essential reading for whoever is responsible for the installation of this implementation of the NAG C Library. It is supplied in printed form to accompany the software, and is also available together with the Users' Note (un.html) in the doc directory on the distribution medium.

Your attention is drawn to the terms and conditions of the Software Licence regarding the use of NAG software. Any request to use this software other than on the licensed computer must be referred to NAG, as should requests for information about the availability of other implementations.

2. Implementation Provided

2.1. Applicability

This implementation is a compiled, tested, ready-to-use version of the NAG C Library that is considered suitable for operation on the computer systems detailed below:

hardware: 32 bit Intel systems and compatible
operating system: Windows XP/2003
Compiler: Microsoft Visual C++ .NET Release 8.0

2.2. Derivation

This implementation was produced at NAG Ltd., Oxford on the computing system detailed below:

hardware: Dell Pentium 2 workstation
operating system: Windows NT 4.0
C compiler:       Microsoft Visual C/C++ Version 6.0
Linker: Microsoft Visual C++ .NET Release 8.0 on Windows XP
compiler options: /MD /Gz /O2
The compiler option /Gz means "compile using __stdcall calling convention", /MD means "use the (multithreaded) DLL version of the C run-time library" and /O2 is full optimisation.

The DLL files in this implementation were created using the Microsoft Visual C++ .NET Release 8.0 linker and C run time libraries on a Windows XP system. Hence these DLLs are linked with a version of MSVCRT.LIB that is an import library for MSVCR80.DLL.

An alternative DLL implementation, product code CLDLL074Z, is available which is compiled with the /MD option and linked with the version of MSVCRT.LIB distributed with Visual C++ 6.0, which is an import library for MSVCRT.DLL.

The NAG C Library, Mark 7, is provided in two versions.

nagc.lib and nagc.dll
This Library has been tested with the Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) and linear algebra functions (LAPACK) provided by NAG (see the Chapter Introductions for f06, f07 and f08 in the NAG C Library Manual).
nagc-mkl.lib and nagc-mkl.dll
This Library has been tested with Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) and linear algebra functions (LAPACK) provided by the Intel® Math Kernel Library 5.2 for Windows (MKL) which is included in this product. Please see the Intel web site for further information about MKL (http://www.intel.com/software/products/mkl).

The LAPACK functions ZHPEVD and ZUNMBR in MKL are not used, instead the NAG versions of the same functions are called by nagc-mkl.dll.

The nagc-mkl.dll version of the library has been tested with the mkl_def.dll MKL kernel.

3. Distribution Medium

The software is ordinarily distributed on CD-ROM.

example program material: 3.1 Mb

PDF documentation files: 92.2 Mb

4. Installation

4.1. Library Installation

You will need to be Administrator to install this software.

Normally the CD will autostart to begin installation; if it does not do so, perhaps because this option has been turned off on the user's system, then use Windows Explorer to locate and run the file setup.exe. InstallShield will lead you through the installation.

The installation procedure will set the system environment variables PATH, INCLUDE and LIB.

If it is planned to use Microsoft Visual Studio to build programs that use the NAG C Library, each user should set the appropriate options. From the Visual Studio "Tools" menu, select "Options" and expand the "Projects and Solutions" section and click the "VC++ Directories" entry. Using the "Show directories for" menu,

Installation of the library requires a licence key, which will be provided by NAG. This will either be a 'Trial' key, which will allow you to try out the library for a limited period of time, or a 'Fully Paid' key which enables use of the library indefinitely on a specific workstation. If you do not have a key, InstallShield will generate a file (usually saved as C:\CL_Licence_Request.txt), which may be E-mailed or faxed to NAG. In return NAG will send you a valid licence key.

Once in possession of a valid licence key begin the installation process again. You will be prompted for the licence key. Once this has been entered the process will continue.

4.2. PDF Documentation

If you do not already have a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader for your platform, a free copy can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/. Please check this site for availability of a reader for your platform.

Please note that if you are using Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or earlier you might experience some problems when printing documents that contain non-standard characters, such as integral signs, square roots and large brackets. These characters will print correctly using Adobe Acrobat 5.0.

The HTML form of the Essential Introduction contains some mathematical characters that are displayed as question marks by releases of Netscape earlier than 6, but these are displayed correctly by Netscape 6 and Internet Explorer. If this proves to be a probem, view the PDF document.

If using Netscape, it might be necessary to re-install Acrobat to ensure that the Acrobat plug-in has been installed. If the plug-in has not been installed, Netscape may copy PDF files to a temporary directory, and then not be able to navigate from there.

4.3. Release to Users

The Users' Note (doc\un.html) should be checked and amended as necessary (particularly Sections 3.1 and 5). Advice on accessing the library in Section 3.1 can be checked by running a few example programs following that advice; a suitable sample would be a02bac, d01ajc, g05ffc and s17akc. The installation can also be tested using the script NAGEX.BAT. The Users' Note should then be made available to users directly, or be absorbed into local access information.

The following material should also be made accessible to users:

documentation files:

the doc\Manual07 directory contains the online documentation.

Compiled libraries:

lib\nagc-mkl.lib
bin\nagc-mkl.dll
mkl\lib\*.lib
mkl\bin\*.dll
and, as required,
lib\nagc.lib
bin\nagc.dll
Include files:
include\*.h
example program material:
examples\source\*e.c
examples\data\*e.d
examples\results\*e.r
batch\envvars.bat
batch\nagex.bat

Note that the example material has been adapted, if necessary, from that published in the NAG C Library Manual, so that programs are suitable for execution with this implementation with no further changes (but see Section 4.4 for comments about possible differences in results obtained). Making the example material directly available to users provides them with easily adaptable templates for their own problems.

4.4. Example Programs

The example results distributed were generated at Mark 7, using the library nagc.dll and the Microsoft Visual C++ .NET Release 8.0 compiler. These example results may not be exactly reproducible if the example programs are run in a slightly different environment (for example, a different C compiler, a different compiler library, different arithmetic hardware, or a different set of BLAS or LAPACK functions). The results which are most sensitive to such differences are: eigenvectors (which may differ by a scalar multiple, often -1, but sometimes complex); numbers of iterations and function evaluations; and residuals and other "small" quantities of the same order as the machine precision.

The "example programs" for the functions in the f06 chapter are not typical example programs and they are not in the Library Manual. They are test programs, which are supplied to sites for use in an installation test of the Library. Some of them take much longer to run than other example programs. Routines which are equivalent to BLAS are tested twice: once when called by their NAG f06 names, and once when called by their BLAS names.

4.5 Maintenance Level

The maintenance level of the library can be determined by writing a simple program to call a00aac, which prints out details of the implementation, including title and product code, compiler and precision used, mark and maintenance level.

5. Documentation

Each supported NAG C Library site is ordinarily provided with a printed copy of the NAG C Library Introductory Guide. Additional documentation is available for purchase; please refer to the NAG websites or contact your local NAG Response Centre for current prices (see Section 6).

Online documentation is bundled with this implementation. Please see Section 4.2.
