4. Installation

4.1. Product Installation

The CD should autorun, if it doesn’t double click on setup.exe from Windows Explorer.

To install and use the software a licence key is required. This key is either a 30 day trial key or a permanent key. The key ties the use of the software to the machine on which the installation is performed.

When the application setup is invoked it determines whether to actually install the software or provide the information necessary for NAG to provide a suitable licence key.

If NAG has not already provided you with a licence key then click the ‘No’ button on the query ‘Have you a licence key ready to type in?’. On the next query you are asked what type of licence key you are applying for; the options are a permanent key (for sites that have licenced the product) or a 30 day trial key. You are then prompted for your name and contact details to enable a suitable key to be returned to you. Finally the procedure creates a file C:\NAG_DMC_Licence_Request.txt. This file should be sent to NAG who will generate an appropriate licence key and return it to you.

Once you have received the licence key invoke the application setup again. At the first query ‘Have you a licence key ready to type in?’ click the ‘Yes’ button. You will then be prompted to input your licence key; all characters of the key, including hyphens, are significant. Following two screens of informational material you are asked to select a disk directory into which the NAG Data Mining Components should be read; you can either accept the default location or use the browse button to select an alternative directory. The next screen enables you to select which parts of the components are to be installed on disk; as the installed size is less than 10Mb we recommend that all elements, both software and documentation, are installed to disk.

The installation procedure will add the library and include files paths to the LIB and INCLUDE environment variables respectively. This will simplify linking with the library and using the include files on the command line. It is recommended that you check that the installation has done this correctly. Under Windows NT, 2000 and XP, the environment variables can be viewed from the Control Panel; under Windows 95/98, the autoexec.bat file should be examined. Please note you may have to reboot the machine for the re-specified environment variables to take effect.

4.2. Documentation Installation

The default action during installation is to install the online documentation on to the disk. The online documentation for the NAG Data Mining Components is located in directory Documents. This User Guide is a set of both HTML and PDF files, the root of which is the file nag_dmc_intro.html. You are encouraged to make the guide readily available to users, but in such a way that it is not generally accessible from outside your site. Please note that if you do not have a pdf viewer available then the Adobe Acrobat Reader can be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe Web site at http://www.adobe.com/.

4.3. Checking Accessibility

The installer should ensure that the advice given to users in Sections 3.1 and 3.2 of the Users' Note (Doc\user_dll.html) is suitable for the installation. This can be done by running a few example programs, in directory Examples, following that advice; the expected results are located in directory Examples\Results.

4.4. Release to Users

The Users' Note (Doc\user_dll.html) should be checked and amended as necessary (particularly Sections 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3). Besides modifying the commands required to access the NAG Data Mining Components you can give precise information regarding the location of the online documentation and the example programs at your installation.

The following material should also be made accessible to users:

compiled library:

Library\nag_dmc.dll
Library\nag_dmc.lib
include files:
Include\*.h
example program material:
Examples\*.c
Examples\*.dat
Examples\Results\*.r
documentation files:
Doc\*.html
Doc\*.pdf
