Intel® DMI 2.0 Service Provider SDK Version 1.10 for Microsoft Win32*
The DMI 2.0 Service Provider (SP) Software Developer Kit (SDK) Version 1.10 for Win32 provides tools and utilities that help hardware and software developers design products that take advantage of the inter-platform management capabilities of the DMI. The DMI specification defines a common framework for managing diverse desktop, server and mobile systems that allows products from many vendors to be managed by any DMI-enabled management application.
The "DMI 2.0 Service Provider SDK Reference Manual," containing detailed information about the SDK and its source files and examples, is included with the SDK as an Adobe Acrobat* PDF file.
Benefits:
- DMI lowers the total cost of ownership by being an operating system and protocol-independent common framework for managing desktop systems and servers.
- Is the standard method for accessing and/or describing management information of platforms, reduces development costs, time to market.
- Vendors can build interoperable manageability into their products.
- DMI is Operating System/Network Operating System (OS/NOS) -independent that allows system vendors to support multiple market/customer segments with a single management strategy.
- Extensible Management Information Format (MIFs).
- Value-added management features can easily be built into products without prior knowledge of target platform configuration or viewing management applications.
Features:
- Independent of a specific computer or operating system.
- Independent of a specific management protocol.
- Easy for vendors to adopt.
- Usable locally—no network required.
- Mappable to existing management protocols (for example, CMIP, SNMP).
- The DMI procedural interfaces are specifically designed to be remotely accessible through the use of Remote Procedure Calls (RPC). The RPCs supported by the DMI include:
Who should use the DMI SDK for Win32?
- PC OEMs that want to develop their own Graphical User Interface (GUI) on top of their instrumentation.
- Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who are developing products that utilize the benefits of DMI and have their own GUI.
- Independent Hardware Vendors (IHVs) who are developing products that utilize the benefits of DMI and have their own GUI.
The SDK provides the following:
- Service Provider installation and setup.
- Reference documentation (Desktop Management Task Force, Inc. [DMTF] standards, white papers and technical briefs).
- Standard Management Interface.
The SDK includes several elements:
- DMI 2.0 Service Provider establishes the link between managed products and the applications that deliver management value to users.
- Service Provider Setup Utility for OEMs "silently" installs the DMI 2.0 Service Provider and required components on a Windows* 95 and Windows NT* system. OEMs may use this utility in conjunction with their own product setup program to install the Intel DMI Service Provider on their customers' systems.
- DMI 2.0 Service Provider SDK Reference Manual provides an overview of the SDK, including installation instructions and options; an introduction to DMI technology; guidelines for developing DMI-enabled systems; tips for modeling MIF files; DMI 2.0 code samples and process diagrams; DMI SDK procedure library functions and code samples; an overview of the tools and utilities included in the SDK; and a comprehensive glossary of DMI terms.
Changes from previous release:
- The Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider SDK Version 1.10 for Win32 implements a new feature that allows the configuration of the SP and indication server for selected RPC and transport protocols.
- The Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider SDK Win 32 Version 1.10 implements a new feature that allows the control of the RPC functionality of the Service Provider at startup and during Service Provider execution.
- The client front-end API was extended in this release of the DMI SDK, to include new functions. You do not have to recompile or re-link existing applications.
- Several Service Provider problems were fixed, particularly in the national language support.
See the SDK Reference Manual for more information regarding the above changes.
