Nways Remote Monitor Version 2.0 Installation Guide


Introduction

This chapter provides a brief description of IBM Nways Workgroup Remote Monitor and the versions of Windows it can operate on, describes the versions of the Nways Manager product family that it can interface to, and lists the hardware and software requirements for using Nways Remote Monitor. It also explains the limitations of this product if a demonstration version of it is installed.

If you are migrating from IBM Nways LAN Remote Monitor for Windows, read "Migration" before performing the installation.


Demonstration Version

If you are installing a demonstration version of this product, you will be installing a fully functional version of the product. The product will become INOPERATIVE 60 days after you install it.

You can order and install a non-demonstration version of the product at any time before or after the demonstration version has expired.

About Nways Remote Monitor

Nways Remote Monitor consists of an integrated set of applications that you can use to display and explore the real-time and historical data captured by RMON-compliant devices on the network. You can configure and direct those devices from Nways Remote Monitor.

Nways Remote Monitor includes the Reporter application, which provides the ability to generate reports, including charts, from information that Nways Remote Monitor can collect. The Reporter application of Nways Remote Monitor in conjunction with the Collector application enables you to collect and analyze RMON data for base line and trend analysis.


Operating Systems and Nways Manager Access

Nways Remote Monitor must be installed on Windows NT Version 4.0. It can be used as a set of stand-alone applications or accessed from IBM Nways Manager for Windows NT.

Nways Manager for Windows NT allows you to create entries in its topology for RMON probes manually and through auto-discovery. Nways Remote Monitor applications can be accessed through these topology entries and from a larger list of devices that have embedded RMON probes. The supported probes are:

These recommendations are specifically for Nways Remote Monitor. If you install it on the same workstation as IBM Nways Manager for Windows NT, please refer to the appropriate installation guide and the Nways Manager README file for additional recommendations.


Software Requirements

The Nways Remote Monitor for Windows NT requires Microsoft Windows NT Version 4.0 with Windows NT TCP/IP support installed.

These requirements are specifically for Nways Remote Monitor. If you install it on the same workstation as IBM Nways Manager for Windows NT, please refer to the appropriate installation guide and the Nways Manager README file for additional requirements.
